ALLENTOWN, Pa. (WLVT) - Political science professor Christopher Borick is a nationally recognized public researcher who directs the Muhlenberg College Institute of Public Opinion.

On Wednesday, he analyzed the 2020 presidential election during a webinar with the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce.

One of the many things Borick dug into with the data was why people voted.

"If you were looking at the economy, immigration and those are your biggest issues, you overwhelmingly voted for President Trump," Borick said. "If you were looking at health care, climate change, and of course the pandemic, you overwhelmingly voted for Joe Biden and you can see those divides."

Borick said Northampton County maintained its status as a bellwether region.

Biden won Northampton County, the state of Pennsylvania and the presidency, according to projections. It's a swing county in the truest sense. Voters in Northampton County went for Obama twice, swung to the GOP with Trump in 2016 and back blue again this year with Biden.

Borick also looked to the future and the next round of redistricting.

"Pennsylvania in all likelihood is going to lose one congressional seat, going down to 17," he said. "Where are those demographics going to be aligned? Demographics have pushed the population towards the east, southeast, so most of the population is in those districts. So, we’ll see those districts move this way."
