BETHLEHEM, Pa. (WLVT) - During all the musical fun at MusikFest, there will be a glass-blowing competition in front of the blast furnaces at the Steel Stacks.

“This has pretty much consumed half my life,” said Kevin Smolark. He’s a contestant in the glass-blowing competition, and he’s been working with glass for 20 years.

Smolark creates glass art for museums, shops, and galleries throughout the country. “I wanted to be able to make functional things with my hands,” said Smolark. “If it ever comes down to a period of time where we - as people - need to step up, I can make cups and bowls and dishes, so that everybody can survive with food.

The glass pavilion is put on by the ArtsQuest Glass Studio. They moved to the Steel Stacks for MusikFest after severe flooding damaged their equipment last year. A kaleidoscope meditation chamber sits near the glass-blowing tents and there are also workshops for people to create their own glass art.
