EASTON, Pa. (WLVT) - A sinkhole opened up, swallowing a man’s SUV near James and East Kleinhans Streets in Easton Monday afternoon.

“I’m going to die right now,” said Md Islam, as he relived the moment when his SUV fell victim to a sinkhole. “I just drove through like normal, and suddenly like this, I’m going into the sink and I see a lot of water going through, and at that time I was scared, you know?”

Moments before the incident, Md’s daughter, Saqiba Islam, was looking out the window, waiting for him to come home. “‘Yay, my dad is coming. My dad is coming!’” said Saqiba. She, then, saw the exact moment her dad’s SUV fell into the sinkhole.

“I really wanted to help, and I couldn’t believe that it was my dad’s car,” said Saqiba. She said she found relief in seeing her dad and his friend start climbing out of the car. “I was feeling really sad, but then, at the same time, they were alive, that’s why I was feeling happy.”

The accident happened around 1:25 Monday afternoon, and Mayor Sal Panto said it’s hard to tell if the sinkhole was caused by a water main break, or if the water main break created the sinkhole.

Mayor Panto said some pipes are nearly 100 years old, though the ones near the accident haven’t quite reached that age. “It’s still susceptible to breaks because of thawing and freezing, warm weather and cold weather, and we’ve had a lot of rain over the last day,” said Mayor Panto.

Because this is not the first time Easton has experienced sinkholes, Mayor Panto said they are working to address the problem. “We have a lot of work to do underground,” said Mayor Panto. “The water authority’s been replacing over five miles of mains in the City of Easton over the last couple years, but there’s a lot more to go.”

Md said he just wants to make sure these problems can be resolved in the future. “They have to take care of it you know? This is the people’s lives,” said Md. Meanwhile, his daughter is just happy to have her dad alive. “The car is not a big thing,” said Saqiba. “Anything left in the car is not a big thing. The fact the two of them survived, that’s what matters.”
