Federal Funding for Public Media is Under Threat

At the end of May, the White House issued a memo to Congress that includes a request to take back previously approved funds for public media locally and across the country. This followed President Donald Trump’s executive order earlier in May directing the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to end federal funding for NPR and PBS. These actions threaten independent local news coverage and educational programming that benefits you and millions of other Americans.

Public Media is More Important Than Ever

Public media reaches 99% of Americans and is often the only local media outlet available in communities where other news media organizations have disappeared. Public media is more important than ever – not only for unbiased news and information, but for programming that contributes to an informed citizenry and community engagement initiatives that bring neighbors together on topics of local concern.

Lehigh Valley Public Media is Your Public Media

With your continued support, we are here to stay. In fact, about 80% of Lehigh Valley Public Media’s operating budget is funded by local support. It’s members like you who will continue to make it possible for us to:

  • Provide local news on LehighValleyNews.com to 350,000 users each month
  • Produce programs like A Community Conversation on complex local subjects
  • Air 16 local newscasts daily on 91.3 WLVR, the Lehigh Valley’s NPR station
  • Distribute 5,300+ free books to families last year through our Book Nook program
  • Offer free Summer Series events for families including live concerts and youth activities
  • Host Good News Tours, welcoming 500+ students to our studios for career exploration

What Can You Do to Help?

Almost 20% of Lehigh Valley Public Media’s operating budget comes from federal funds. A rescission of federal funding would result in a gap that would need to be replaced to fully maintain local news and programming that directly affects you and your neighbors in the Lehigh Valley.
