ALLENTOWN, Pa. (WLVT) - A Lehigh Valley woman has been doing hair since she was 14 years old, and now she is opening up a salon in Allentown for people with cancer.

“I’ve had a few friends from church who underwent chemo and didn’t know what to do,” said Style With Care salon owner, Naylin Rivera.

She styles hair, but she is also a nurse. The two worlds come together for her because she makes wigs for people losing their hair during chemotherapy treatments.

“They were so happy,” said Rivera. “Just to see their faces, and their smiles, knowing they could go to church, go to their appointments and look normal, and not be looked at as if they were different or ill.” Rivera said in her new salon, there will be two private rooms to make clients feel more comfortable.

“They’re very self-conscious,” said Rivera. “They don’t want to just sit in the middle of an open room feeling vulnerable, so having the privacy setting does help a lot.”

Even though she’s been doing hair for several years, losing a close patient, pushed Rivera to open a physical location. “I’ve always had the passion for doing hair, but once I lost her, it was a little heartbreaking for me, and I thought this is the time.”

The salon will be in Allentown’s West End at 1809 Allen St.

After all city inspections are passed, Rivera is hoping to have the salon open in November. To contact Rivera, click here to visit the salon's website.
