TOBYHANNA, Pa. (WLVT) - The Monroe County Habitat for Humanity is working to make sure people can have affordable access to home repairs through an initiative called the Home Preservation Program.
“A lot of people, especially seniors who are living on fixed income, cannot afford home repairs,” said executive director, Kelly Kemmerer. “They don’t have that $10,000 laying around to pay for a roof.”
This program is aiming to do 30 home repairs by June 30; so far, they’ve done 16. Kemmerer said they are trying to offer assistance to people who need it, because they understand the cost of living in the Poconos can be expensive. Kemmerer said people should not be ashamed to apply for assistance, and they should think of the service as a hand up, not a handout.
“They are just having a hard time,” said Kemmerer. “It’s not something that should be stigmatized. The homeowners pay us back over five years, with a zero percent interest loan.”
The Monroe County Habitat for Humanity also has a competition event coming up to highlight women in the construction industry, called She Nailed It. It is on May 19 from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Merrytown USA in Mount Pocono.
