Matthew Hengeveld was already carefully honing his skills in coffee roasting when his friend Dan Taylor—who had been roasting professionally in Lancaster—suggested they go into business together. They launched Monocacy Coffee Co. in 2015, and began selling their goods at farmers’ markets and to local restaurants. Two years later in spring of 2017, Lit Roastery and Bakeshop became a reality, in partnership with Melanie Lino of Made by Lino bakery.
Now Matt and Dan produce their ethically-sourced coffees on site at the South Side Bethlehem establishment, in a shining metal roaster visible to customers.
Their coffees come from all over the world, but the team is driven by a community-minded mission. Keeping the Lehigh Valley in mind at all times, they partner with area farms and businesses to source as locally as possible whenever possible; incorporate local makers, artists, and suppliers into the space, with pop-up shops and events; and offer flavor profiles that both satisfy and expand a local palate.
