City of Allentown Works to Reduce Lead Hazards with Grants

ALLENTOWN, Pa. (WLVT) - The City of Allentown got a $347,500 grant to help reduce lead hazards in houses and rental units.
Heidi Westerman with the city's department of community and economic development said lead paint is the top reason for exposure in Allentown. People have to be income-qualified, making less than 80 percent of the median income to receive assistance. "Lead hazard reduction means that we’re eliminating the immediate hazards and then it will be up to the landlord or homeowners to then maintain that property for years after," said Westerman. "So that’s by looking and making sure you don’t see any of the paint peeling and chipping again."
Westerman said this grant will be to work on 40 homes, but it will not be the last of the lead grants for Allentown. She is working on another round to reach more families and houses in the city. To reach the department, you can call 610.437.7610 or click here to visit the website.
