BETHLEHEM, Pa. (WLVT) -Liza Perez moved her family to the Lehigh Valley after Hurricane Maria ravaged their home in Puerto Rico three years ago.

"We had no food, no water, no electricity. So it was a very hard situation in that moment," she said.

Now just she and her son remain in Pennsylvania. The rest of her family has returned to Puerto Rico.

"Because they missed the island and for the language," she said. "They have difficulty, and I have difficulty with the English language. But I try every day to learn. So they returned."

Bethlehem Councilwoman Olga Negron says the state helped up in the wake of Maria to make sure kids didn't miss out on classes.

Hundreds of students flooded into the Bethlehem Area and Allentown school districts.

"The Department of Education in the state made changes, drastic changes," Negron said. "You don't need to show your birth certificate, or your vaccination card. If they come from Puerto Rico, were going to enroll them right away."
