Increased Outdoor Activity Creates National Shortage in Bicycles

EASTON, Pa. (WLVT) - With many people looking for outdoor activities amid the global crisis, demand for bicycles has dramatically increased, causing a shortage in supply.

“I haven’t seen anything like this since the 70s during the gas shortage,” said owner of Genesis Bicycles, Tomias Hinchcliff. “Every manufacturer I know of - and I know of a lot - is sold out of bikes.”

Hinchcliff said the problem is similar to a domino-effect. The majority of bikes are made in China, according to Hinchcliff, and it usually takes about 120 days from the time he orders a bike to the time it arrives in the U.S. Unfortunately, production in China was shut down in January and February because the country was battling the Coronavirus. Since very few bikes were being produced while more people were looking to purchase bikes, that created the shortage.

“A lot of traditional ways people get exercise are not happening now,” said Hinchliff. “People need to be able to get out and maintain distance from each other.” With kids being out of school and adults working from home, he said people have driven hours to Genesis Bicycles to get a bike because of the national shortage.

Hinchcliff still has bikes for sale, but he is uncertain what the coming months will look like for business. “If I order a bike now, that I don’t already have on order, it’s going to come in in November,” said Hinchcliff.

If you find a bike you’re looking for, Hinchcliff suggests you don’t hesitate in getting it. “Because it’s just going to get worse this year,” said Hinchcliff. The problem appears to continue on through this year, but Hinchcliff said he thinks they will be back on track in 2021.

The inside of the store is currently closed for safety reasons, but you can click here to order on their website. You can also call Genesis Bicycles at 610.253.1140 if you need bike service or have questions.
