Intern Journal #4: From One Intern to Another
It is no secret that, as interns, we find ourselves at the bottom of the metaphorical food chain. As such, we have to find a way to stand out from the crowd. After all, life is what you make it, and the same goes for your internship. With that being said, I believe there are five golden rules to follow in order to make the most of your internship experience.
Have a positive attitude. As interns, we will be given a fair share of grunt work. No matter what the task at hand, take on every responsibility with enthusiasm. We must “pay our dues” to get to where were going. The quickest way to kill a good internship is by being a negative Nancy.
Set personal goals for yourself. Regardless of how structured your internship may be, begin your internship with an idea of areas you would like to learn more about.
Take initiative. Jump at the chance to tackle tough problems, and don’t be afraid to think outside the box when suggesting solutions.
Ask questions. Remember: an internship is a learning experience. You are not expected to know everything. Seek advice and be open-minded to new ideas.
Network, network, network! Probably one of the most obvious tricks of the trade, networking is a quintessential skill in your professional endeavors. Take advantage of every single opportunity that is thrown your way.
