2015: The Year in Review
2015 will be remembered as a momentous year at PBS39. It was a year full of special events, unique programs, and unforgettable milestones.
In the spring, we said hello to the Fifth Annual PBS39 MicroBrew Festival at Coca-Cola Park in Allentown. Just this month, we threw a party to wave goodbye to Downton Abbey, whose final season begins Wed., Jan. 6 at 9 p.m. on PBS39. Throughout the year, we welcomed the arts into our studio, with appearances and performances from Mary Fahl, Celtic Thunder’s Colm Keegan and Laura Durrant, and Italian-born singer Giada Valenti, among others.
The arts were also a major programming FOCUS this year (see what we did there?) In addition to celebrating every First Friday on our weekly news magazine show, we have proudly presented original music from around the world and here at home, with programs like Behind the Guitar and Steel Sessions produced in-house.
Going back to FOCUS, our flagship show was nominated for four Mid-Atlantic Emmy Awards this year. We are excited to see what 2016 holds, when FOCUS moves to a new night and time – Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. – on January 26.
We also pitched in around the community, whether it was to add “comfort” to Salvation Army cottages, or to do some actual pitching at the Miracle League of the Lehigh Valley’s Whiffleball Challenge for Charity. You saw us in other places, too, like the Da Vinci Science Center, Lehigh Valley Hospital – Muhlenberg, and many more.
Of course, let’s not forget the big news: Our building got a new name in 2015! Our facility at SteelStacks is now known as the PPL Public Media Center at PBS39, and we are very excited to partner with PPL Corporation as we continue to expand our reach into our community in a number of ways, in 2016 and beyond. We announced the news on Oct. 1 with a press conference, which this video recaps quite nicely.
Tonight, we say goodbye to 2015, and enter another year of fresh possibilities. For one thing, we have a few new documentaries in the works for 2016, including our highly-anticipated piece on the Liberty High School Grenadier Band. We will continue supporting our local education community as we highlight our winning Empowering Educators teams and our Full STEAM Ahead! initiative, home to such programs as Artist of the Month and Create With Me, among others.
And, of course, you can be sure that many of your favorite PBS39 programs and events are primed to come back strong in the New Year.
We are confident that 2016 will bring about as much unique excitement as the year it will succeed. From all of us at PBS39, have a happy and safe New Year!
