You can imagine how surprised the people were when a bear walked up.  They were even more surprised to find how polite and friendly he was.  He explained to them that he wanted to do something important in his life, something where he could be with small people.  He asked if they could help him find some of these creatures.

All the people were astonished.  One of them explained to him that they worked for a TV station, WLVT.  WLVT is special, they said, because it is a public broadcasting station with wonderful programs for young people. It is the home of Big Bird, Barney, Arthur, and Wishbone.  At that very moment the people were discussing the choice of a mascot.

"What's a mascot?" asked the bear.

"A mascot is a special animal that represents a place or a group of people.  It is thought to bring good luck.  When people see a mascot it reminds them about all the wonderful things the group or place can do for them.  Our TV station, WLVT, needs a mascot to help children learn more about our special programs for them."

"What are children?" asked the bear.

"Children are little people.  They are very important to our TV station.  Every day we show programs to help them learn and grow."
