Hannah Wolf (left), 16, of Parkland High School wins the top prize at the Intel International Science and Engineering Science Fair in Indianapolis on Thursday, May 11, 2006. Other winners Madhavi Gavini (center) of Mississippi and Meredith MacGregor (right) of Colorado also won the Intel Foundation Young Scientist Award
|
CONGRATULATIONS to Parkland High School sophomore, Hannah Wolf for winning top honors at the world's largest pre-college science fair on Thursday, May 11, 2006. Wolf, 16, took home a $50 thousand scholarship for her project Sleuthing Epicenter Direction from Seismites. The straight-A student competed against nearly 1500 students from over 40 countries at the Intel International Science and Engineering Research Fair in Indianapolis last week. Madhavi Gavini of Mississippi and Meredith MacGregor of Colorado also won the Intel Foundation Young Scientist Award. Wolf spent last July in Utah, studying formations caused by ancient earthquakes in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. She tried to determine the epicenters of the quakes and assess the impact. Understanding where the most damage occurred can lead scientists to more accurately predict seismic hazards.
Congratulations to another local student, Isha Jain of Bethlehem. Jain, 15, won a fourth award in the Zoology category for her project, Cell Proliferation is Episodic and Pulsatile During Growth of Zebrafish fins. Jain, a Freedom High School sophomore researched fin growth at the "fish lab" at Lehigh University to increase understanding of development that could be applied to humans. She won a $500 scholarship.
